Sketches is a community-centered visual storytelling project by artist Segundo Orellana, developed through the Huntington Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship, a program designed to support artistic growth and creative exploration.Through this project, Segundo spent extended time engaging with people across Suffolk County, Long Island, creating live sketches rooted in conversation, observation, and human connection. His subjects include immigrants, people experiencing homelessness, artists, youth, women, seniors, and African American community members—individuals whose stories are often overlooked or undocumented. Each sketch captures more than a likeness; it holds a moment of shared presence. By listening, witnessing, and drawing in real time, Segundo transformed everyday encounters into intimate visual records of memory, resilience, and identity. The project allowed him to deepen his artistic practice while embedding himself more fully within the community he serves, using drawing as a tool for empathy, reflection, and social connection. Sketches stands as both a personal and collective archive—honoring lived experiences, amplifying diverse voices, and affirming the power of art to build bridges across communities.
